The
Pickwick Club - A well-established naturist club The
Pickwick Club was
established
in Corsham in 1986 by a local couple whose family had been naturists for
many years. They
felt that there was a niche for a swim club in the Wiltshire area as the
nearest one to Corsham at that time was Chepstow in South Wales and the
increasing cost of the Severn Bridge tolls and travel expenses made
Chepstow an expensive evening. Meetings
with the Paris Council and North Wilts District Council were held and a
trial swim took place in January 1986. Only the pool was available then,
the hiring cost being £16 for one hour. Approximately
16 naturists attended the first swim this figure including 4 children and
a volunteer lifeguard. After several swims we had sufficient numbers to
form a club. The
name Pickwick was chosen as the pool is located near Pickwick Road and the
village of Pickwick. A
steering committee was formed and Chairman Treasurer and Secretary
elected. Membership
gradually increased and the introduction of the Health Suite, which
included Sauna Jacuzzi and Steam Room, combined with an increase from one
to two hours proved an extra bonus for our members. A
quarterly Fun Night was subsequently added to our programme. Pickwick
is now a well-established naturist club with members travelling from all
over the Wiltshire area and beyond
